Kent Brown - New PL coach

It is with great excitment that Reebok CrossFit 306 would like top officially welcome Kent Brown as part of our coaching staff.  Kent has been part of 306 for over three years, and continously demostrates the "Community above all else" mantra that we preach.  Kent has become an excellent powerlifter over the last couple years,  taking silver at the national championships in both 2014 and 2015.

Kent will now be helping our powerlifters reach new heights, and help all 306 members improve their lifts.  Kent will work closely with Marc Morris who will continue to provide the strategic direction for our Powerlifting club.  Please join me in welcoming Kent to the 306 coaching team.

Kent Brown:

I grew up in a small town, Zealandia, about an hour west of Saskatoon.  Ever since I can remember I've always been a very competitive and an aggressive person in any sports that I played.  Growing up I played hockey, football, soccer really anything that was a contact sport.  Being smaller, only 5'7 on a good day and weighing 150 pounds, I was always looking to get stronger so I could be competitive with my larger competitors.

After high-school sports were over my focus on fitness really started to decline and I was your regular guy trying to go to the gym 3 times a week and hitting chest every day and no legs.

In the winter of 2012 I found Reebok Crossfit 306 which allowed my competitive spirt to once again come out and slowly began to rebuild my body and core after years of improper training.  Around 8 months later, the gym started its power lifting program and I was hooked and have rarely missed a training session since then.

2014 National Power Lifting Championship - 2nd place
2014 Western Canadian Power Lifting Championship - 2nd place
2015 National Power Lifting Championship - 2nd place
One of the top 20 classic power lifters in Saskatchewan

Powerlifting Nationals Recap

So after a great week in St. John's team 306 came back with 4 medals, lots of PR's and tons of great memories.
 
Lifting started off on Tuesday with Jessie and Lana.  Judging was tough on the national stage, but the girls adjusted their squats accordingly and continued to fight.  
 
Lana hit some good PR's and showed a new level of focus and mental strength.  It's going to be exciting to watch what Lana can accomplish in this upcoming year.  
 
Jessie's number one goal coming into the competition was too win gold and defend her national championship.  Jessie accomplished this and finished first and is now looking forward to her first international competition, North American's in July.
 
Next up was Brandee on Wednesday.  Brandee hit PR's on everything but bench, but came very close to hitting her 3rd bench which would have been a 7.5 kg PR and finished with a silver medal.  This is exceptional considering Brandee was competing with a cracked rip.  Throughout the week all anyone could talk about was how Brandee had exceptional technique on all her lifts.  
 
Thursday the guys started to lift.  We had Paul, Kent, Marc and Jay.  Paul started off the morning with a bang going 9 for 9 and barely breaking a sweat while setting all four national records and unofficially hitting a squat and total WORLD record for his age and weight class.  Paul will be looking to officially break these records and potentially more come North American's in July.  
 
Kent and Marc were up next.  Marc fought to make weight, but made it with about a minute to spare.  Marc adjusted his game plan accordingly and finished with a strong 4th place in a very competitive category.  Marc PR'd his competition deadlift, total and wilks and increased his provincial deadlift record to 242.5 kg in the process.
 
Kent had a good day and successfully hit is goal of second place and securing and trip to North American's in July.  Kent hit an easy personal best deadlift of 200 kg and increased his total and wilks score to remain number 1 in wilks at the gym.
 
Jay was up on Thursday afternoon in a very competitive 83 kg class.  Jay missed a few third attempts and did not have his best meet, but took away many learning experiences from competing at his first Powerlifting nationals.
 
Up last was big Luke on Friday.  Luke was up against some big boys, but in the end proved that he could hang with the best of them.  On Luke's last deadlift we increased the weight by 10 kg's after his competitor in front of him missed, which was a 20 kg increase from his second to help him secure 5th place.  This was very exciting has it was a personal best of 290 kg.  When Luke finished his lift he was excited has he thought he lifted 280 kg, but his reaction when he saw it was actually a lot more was priceless.
 
All in all team 306 improved from last year and can only improve from here.
 
Next up for a few of our lifters is North American's in July, which are in Moose Jaw.  So mark your calendars and make sure you come out and cheer for everyone.

 

Two Time Canadian Powerlifting Champion -Jess Buydens

Congratulations to 306 athlete Jessie Buydens on winning her second consecutive national powerlifting title in St-John's NFLD.

Lana Price Wright also competed yesterday. Lana would also make same giant lifts including a 330lbs best back squat and secured a fourth place finish. Congrats ladies on a job well done. Next up our Master's lady Brandee Borne.  The men start on Thursday.

A Fundraising Success!

 

Last night Reebok CrossFit 306 hosted our first annual fundraising event. The event was a huge success raising 2300$ for our athletes and bringing together over 100 members, friends, and relatives of 306. The event was organized to raise funds for athletes that have qualified for one of three National or International level competitions, these are: CrossFit NW regionals, the Powerlifting National Championships, or the National Weightlifting Championships.

This year the following athletes have qualified through meeting or exceeding national standards in their sport or in the case of CrossFit finishing top twenty out of thousands of athletes in their respective regions:

306 lifts BIG!

This past weekend we had 10 lifters, Lana Price-Wright, Tanys Hayes, Paul Farbacher, Braydon Goldstein, Jason Cain, Matthew Flath, Clint Senko, Bones, Cody Milton and Luke Gordon, compete in our 3rd annual power lifting meet.  Out of these 10 lifters we had 5 qualify for nationals (Lana, Paul, Jay, Braydon and Luke).  

 
It was Tanys', Cody's, Matt's, Braydon's and Paul's first meet and they all perform very well.  Tanys went 8 for 9 and hit some huge PR's and took over 4th place on the 306 wilks board.  Cody had a good first meet hitting a big PR squat.  Matt also had a very successful first meet going 8 for 9.  
 
Braydon hit some big PR's and specifically called for a massive 12.5 kg jump on his dead-lift and -still made it look easy.  Braydon had a great day, surprising himself when he realized he'd qualified for nationals with his second dead-lift attempt.
 
Paul who has been doing Powerlifting for about a month put on a great first meet going 8 for 9 and breaking 3 provincial records and 3 unofficial national records only narrowly missing his last dead lift which would have given him all 4 provincial records.  Paul hit a 306 leading squat of 502.7 lbs and secured 4th spot on the 306 wilks board.  
 
Bones had a great meet going 8 for 9, hitting PR's on all 3 lifts and pulling an easy 501 pound dead-lift.
 
Clint showed true grit battling all day and ended up with a PR in the squat and bench and an improved Wilks of close to 20 in about 2 months.  Clint missed his first two squats on depth but battled back and smoked an easy 3rd, this is very impressive has it takes true mental strength to regain composure after missed attempts.
 
Jay went 9 for 9 hitting big PR's on his squat and dead-lift and securing second overall on the 306 Wilk's board.  Jay also easily qualified for nationals and secured 3rd spot on the 306 squat board with a 485 pound squat.
 
Big Luke put on quite the show seemingly making every heavier attempt look easier then the previous.  Luke performs really well on the platform and went 9 for 9 for a second time in as many competitions.  Luke also finished the day with the heaviest dead-lift of the day at 606 lbs.
 
Lana put on a great show, breaking through a year long squat plateau and absolutely killing her 3rd dead-lift which secured her a national qualifying total and 2nd on the 306 board. #LukeStrong.

CF Endurance is Back!

Hey 306,

I'm glad to announce that Sarah Robbins is back with CF Endurance starting next weekend.  Classes will be held twice a week,

Saturdays from 7:30AM - 9:00AM

Sundays from 4:00PM - 5:30PM

Sarah has been busy competing all Summer in a variety of different races, here are her accomplishments from this Summer:

Elkwater Mile High Off-road Triathlon, Alberta: 1st overall
Xterra Canmore, short course:  1st overall
Five Peaks Trail Race, Saskatoon: 2nd
Bumpy Bison Off-road Triathlon, Moose Jaw, 1st overall
Saskatchewan Cyclocross Provincial Championships: 2nd overall
Saskatchewan Cyclocross Provincial Series: 2nd overall
Shimano National Cyclocross championships: 4th (over 30yrs)
Manitoba Grand Prix Cyclocross UCI Race: 4th (over 30yrs)

The goal for CF Endurance for the next 6 months will be to offer an opportunity for all our members to increase their aerobic capacity and handle long enduro style training.  This will be accomplished through a lot of heart rate threshold training and interval style base work.

We look forward to having Sarah's infectious personality retun to 306.

The New Boys of 306

The New Boys of 306 -

It is with great excitement that 306 would like to officially welcome three new coaches as well as a new head coach to our Olympic lifting program.

Joel Baryluk - Joel has been a passionate cross fitter for five years and has demonstrated incredible understanding of biomechanics and the importance of athlete safety. He brings a lot of natural enthusiasm and is a welcome addition to our team. Joel has taking over the Saturday program.

Logan Brown - Logan is the original 306'er. Starting with us on opening day, Logan has steadily become a student of CrossFit furthering his skills and understanding over the last three years. Logan has begun to coach the Sunday program.

Matt Shenher - Fresh off his completion of his engineering degree, Matt has decided to turn his strong analytical skills and complement them with his passion for health and fitness and coaching. Matt will be working full time, taking over the M-F morning shift. His professionalism, attention to detail, and his easy going nature has made him a perfect fit to follow in the footsteps of Rebecca Winterhalt and assume the role of morning coach.

Jeff Woo- Jeff continues his incredible rise as a motivating coach with a keen eye on technique. Jeff will continue to coach a few 7pm classes but his attention will now be on fully developing our 306 Weightlifting Program.

I will continue to program for the gym and coach all the evening classes M-F. Rebecca will be taking on all tasks that are related to bettering our community and the athlete experience.
